Mission

Provide assistance to the school, its faculty and students that would enhance the teaching and study environment in MSHS.

Foster camaraderie and cooperation by providing a structured network connecting all MSHS alumni around the world.

Serve as a "clearing house" to facilitate an organized prioritization and implementation of the alumni, batch and Foundation-sponsored projects for MSHS.

Vision

That all MSHS alumni will be unified under one umbrella organization in providing assistance to the school to uphold the high standards of education that MSHS has been known for.

Why an Alumni Foundation?

Need for a single body that will put together ALL graduates of MSHS.
Need for a single body to represent all MSHS alumni in dealing with the school and other institutions – public and private.

Advantages of having a single “umbrella” entity

It provides links among the different batch associations.
It serves as a ‘clearing house’ of projects which the alumni can undertake for the school.
It can, as one entity, undertake bigger, longer-term programs and projects for the school.
While batch associations link up the different class members with one another, the Foundation links up the different batch associations with one another.

Roles of the Foundation and the Batch Associations

The Foundation pursues bigger/longer term projects and programs; the batches take care of projects with a definite start and completion. (Ex. Batch refurbishes the library or computer room; Foundation subsidizes school’s internet subscription).
The Foundation, working together with the school administration, PTC and Student Council, identifies and prioritizes projects which need the help of alumni. Such projects are then assigned by the Foundation to whichever batch is interested to adopt the project. The batch, then, becomes the project proponent.
The Foundation can tap corporate donors and can solicit funds with tax benefits.

Therefore, ….the MSHS Alumni Foundation, Inc. and the Batch Associations do not compete….

Batch '82's Fundraising Project

CALLING ALL MANILA SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI. THERE WILL BE A GRAND ALUMNI HOMECOMING ON OCTOBER 13, 2007 AT THE MSHS AUDITORIUM. REGISTRATION STARTS AT 1:00 PM. This year's homecoming will also serve as the launching year of our countdown to the Golden Jubilee of the country's pilot science high school (piloted in 1959, founded in 1963) on 2013. Looking forward to its 50th year, the Manila Science High School Alumni Foundation, Inc. (MaSci Foundation) have set the following "golden" targets for its continuing projects and other initiatives :

1. Scholarship Project: 50 scholars (with monthly stipend) at any point in time and 50 scholars graduated from MaSci
2. Alumni Room: at least 50 sq.m.office
3. Ways & Means: at least 50 alumni Multi-purpose Cooperative members
4. Book Project: at least 50 copies of 50 books donated to MaSci
5. MaSci Medics: at least 50 volunteer physician-members
6. Science Research and Competitions: at least 50 member-experts in the pool of advisers
7. Computer Projects: at least 50 computers with internet connectivity
8. Golden Anniversary Bonus for teaching and non-teaching staff

ROSALINA RICANA ESCOBAR

She was born Rosalina San Pedro Ricana, June 18, 1923 in the San Nicolas area of Tondo, Manila. Orphaned at an early age, she was adopted by the loving Real family, and became part of 16 siblings.

Her father, Agapito Ricana, was a “Bombero”, a Manila fireman who died in the line of duty; her mother, Fausta San Pedro, was a devoted wife who died giving birth to a second child who likewise didn’t survive.

She graduated from Torres High School, and later, from the National Teachers College before WWII broke out. She taught elementary education before marrying Jose Garcia Escobar, the only boy in a family of 8 children. She bore ten children (six boys, four girls) and devoted her entire life taking care of her big family.

I was the fifth child in that family of ten. While most of my siblings finished high school at either Torres, Earnshaw or other nearby high schools, I was lucky enough to be admitted at Masci after graduating from Lakandula Elem. School with honors. My nanay could not have been prouder. After all, she gave up her teaching career to raise all of us. She knew the value of good education. She knew of Masci by its great reputation. In her mind, it was my key to a brighter future. It was our way out of poverty.

We were poor; we hardly had enough to eat everyday. We survived by my nanay making “bale” with the vendors/friends at the “talipapa” (local market) everyday. She made meager ends meet. Life was tough in Tondo. There was the constant threat of violence, gang fights, drugs, disease, desperation, drinking, etc. Somehow, word was spread around the “hood” that we were studying hard and should not be “touched”. That silent code was respected. My nanay had a lot to do with that. My “hood” saw how hard she worked for us day in and day out.

Raising ten children was a real challenge; my father was never around much; it was nanay who made us believe that our life would be better if we study harder and work longer than anyone. Financially, sending me to Masci would be a real hardship. She had nine other children to worry about. But my other siblings understood the sacrifices. They pitched in as well when they could. Their support and love was invaluable. Nanay also made me feel that I was special-one of her “favorites”.

By the strength of her perseverance and unwavering belief in me, nanay managed to send me to school everyday; even on weekends. She convinced my other generous relatives to pitch in. She got my neighbors to give me “pamasahe” everyday when she had no more money left. Often, I would find myself waiting at the table in our cramped, dark, dank, rented house in Gagalangin each morning - while nanay searched for money among my understanding neighbors. Somehow, she found a way to let me realize my dreams of finishing at Masci. You could just imagine her pride and joy (and relief!) when I graduated from Masci in 1970. It was my triumph as well as hers. The whole family witnessed my graduation. And when I got an Ateneo scholarship, it was as if my nanay had won the lotto; that’s how ecstatic she was! So was my whole family. Once again, they pitched in to get me through the formative first years at the Loyola campus.

I suppose I could write a book about nanay and her sacrifices, visions, etc. And maybe someday I will. The bottom line-she made it happen for me at Masci. Unbeknownst to many, she kept my Masci diploma…it was only when she passed away 3 years ago that we rediscovered its existence. It was one of her prized possessions. Now, I have it proudly displayed in my home in California! .. beside her picture (above) of course. That’s why I’m passionate about the SCHOLARSHIPS I started in her memory. It was the least I could do to honor her…secondary perhaps to graduating at Masci…and watching her pin the medal on my shirt, beaming with pride, filled with tears, overjoyed with a sense of accomplishment.

I miss her dearly…

Do you want to meet your former teachers from whom you learned how the Earth moves during earthquake; how to solve your first algebra, geometry or calculus problem; or the different species or genus of living things?

If you are one of the Manila Science High School (MSHS or Masci) alumni, your chance to meet your former mentors is on the alumni homecoming on October 14, 2006, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the MSHS Auditorium.

Also featured in this once-in-a-lifetime affair are the school's pioneer teachers, who heroically helped shape the minds of the young students in science learning, and the first recipients of such excellent mentoring, the Special Science Class of Batch 1963.

At the same time, MSHS Alumni Foundation, led by Mr. Constant Flores (Batch 1966), will take this opportunity to report on the foundation's projects that are making waves in enhancing academic excellence at Masci by helping improve the schools learning facilities with more computers, textbooks, scholarships for needy students, and plans for laboratory and library upgrades.

To cap the affair, the Masci alumni will have a chance to shake a leg at the fellowship and free concert at 6 p.m., courtesy of MSHS Class 1981 silver jubilarians.

Call to Join the MaSci-Alumni Science Fair Consultants Pool

We are organizing a pool of alumni-volunteers, preferably doing active research in science and technology, who will serve as the start-up consultants for the science fair projects of Manila Science students. If you are interested, please email mascilink@googlegroups.com. We operate mostly by emails and weblogs, so a strictly virtual (email-based) membership and type of consultantship is possible. Contribution of volunteers who can give hands-on consultation is highly valued.

Based on the last wave of proposals that we have gathered, we have identified chemistry and biology-related expertise to be highly in-demand. Even if your expertise falls in a different scientific or engineering field, your know-how of the ways and ethics of research is usually enough to be able to contribute much to this effort.

Help enhance Manila Science High School High Academic traditions

BY VIRTUE OF REPUBLIC ACT 6655, the Manila Science High School (MSHS or MaSci) became a regular high school in 1989. The Philippine Science High School and Quezon City Science High School, on the other hand, have special funding.

This means that the MSHS’s budget is barely enough to spend for competitive teachers’ salaries/facilities, a dire situation in the light of its demanding curriculum and its bright students who expect quality education.

For many years, the school has had its share of college honor graduates in reputable universities in Manila, leaders in government and private industry, as well as outstanding teachers. These are the reasons why the MSHS Alumni Foundation is resolute to help enhance the MSHS’s high academic traditions. Thus, the foundation is appealing to the public and to all MaSci alumni to volunteer their talents and time. Here are some of the Foundation’s key projects and concerns:

• BOOK PROJECT. Department of Education’s (DepEd) textbooks are not appropriate for MSHS’ science curriculum, but both students and parents find it hard to source the required textbooks, while some can ill-afford to buy them. Reference books are inadequate and outdated.

•COMPUTER MAINTENANCE AND INTERNET PROJECT. The school has many computers mostly provided for by Citibank and Philippine Business for Social Progress, but can neither maintain them nor sustain the Internet services.

•NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE COMPETITION-ASSISTANCE PROJECT. The MSHS relies on project-based (piece-meal) contributions from parents/intermittent donors for the MSHS’s competition entries, packaging, stipends for advisers and the team’s travel expenses. Funds for these purposes are neither enough nor consistent.

•SCHOLARSHIPS. Stipends are given only for needy yet deserving students. And the number of needy students is growing rapidly.

•OTHER PROJECTS. The MSHS Alumni Foundation has been planning to tap the potential support of local and international donors for various high school projects like books, faculty development, computers, and others.

To have a clearer idea on these projects, the MSHS alumni and interested public are invited to attend the MSHS Alumni Volunteers’ Forum on June 10, 1 pm at the MSHS Building, Taft Avenue corner P. Faura Street, Manila.

WHO SAYS the fruits of education come only after graduation?

At the Manila Science High School (MSHS), 10 sophomore students just received early returns for doing well in their studies.

Recently, the 10 students received certificates of scholarship that entitled them to a 10,000-peso annual stipend, or 1,000-peso per month.

The stipend stands to reach 30,000 pesos if they remain scholars up to their senior year.

Jessica Marie A. Tipozo, Ersan R. Ricarde, Stefen Siegel S. Belisario, Michaelle N. Cueco, Niño Joseph I. Paz, Ellen Mariz D. Tayag, Aia Micah P. Dioneda, Chadwick B. Payawal, John Paul E. Abad and Catherine P. Moreno became the first beneficiaries of the MSHS Alumni Foundation Inc. (MSHSAFI) scholarship program.

School and foundation officials recently launched the program to help deserving students.

Councilor Don Bagatsing, representing Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, presented the certificates to the scholars assisted by MSHS principal Rosita Herson and MSHSAFI president Dolores Patag.

Apart from the 10,000-peso annual stipend, each scholar is now covered for accidents in the amount of 50,000 pesos courtesy of Philamlife.

The 10 scholars were chosen from 30 candidates based on a rating criteria which was comprised of 24 percent general average, 24 percent grade in math, 24 percent grade in science, 24 percent gross income allocated per dependent and 4 percent extra curricular.

In his keynote speech, Bagatsing praised the MSHSAFI for its efforts in helping their alma mater and the students.

"The signing of the Agreement today is very important in that it shows the MSHS alumni has a firm commitment in helping the school and the students," Bagatsing, a US-schooled educator himself, said.

The MSHSAFI invites all MaSci-Alumni to share with us an exciting and nostalgic day with our Former Teachers and members of the Special Science Class of Batch63 as our special guests on 14 October 2006 Grand Alumni Homecoming, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the MSHS Auditorium.

During the event, the "Augusto A. Alzona Recognition Award", named after the father of MSHS, will be presented by the MSHSAFI on behalf of the alumni to the pioneer teachers who have served MSHS within the period of 1959-1969, called "Ang mga Guro ng Unang Dekada ng MPPM". Recognition will also be given to the Special Science Class of 1963 as the MSHS Pioneer Batch whose excellence in academic performance paved the way to the foundation of the MSHS.

The MSHSAFI President, Constantino Flores'66, will also take this opportunity to report the projects for the school that are administered by the Foundation thru the alumni's support.

Not only did she grab world attention and made history for becoming the first woman head chef at the White House, Cristeta Pasia Comerford is also the first Fil-American to get this top position. Teta, as we fondly call her, graduated from Manila Science in 1979. She migrated to the US in 1983 to join her family, thus failing to finish her Food Technology course at the University of the Philippines. There are six of us high school friends who have remained close to this day. She came to visit the Philippines twice after she migrated; the first in 1989 and the second in 2004 to attend the Masci Batch 79 Silver Reunion. She spent those memorable visits with us here, her high school "barkada".

Even during high school, Teta had already displayed her artistic talents. She was our resident make-up artist and fashion critic. She sang, and she played the guitar. She always had creative ideas and plans. She added spice and life to group activities, be it in school projects as well as competitions - like cheerleading, games, sports and others. Although she didn’t really always cook then, she could easily identify the ingredients that make up a particular dish! Her mother was a wonderful cook, as well as a good dressmaker. Her father was a retired public school principal. Teta was not a serious student, but she took pride in the things she did. She usually devoted her Saturdays then, doing the house cleaning from the third floor, down to the first floor of their house, and would always focus on her chores. Our un-feminine ways often got her in trouble with her father - - from torn sleeves to going home late because of volleyball. Her father died in the US many years ago.

When Teta first came home in 1989, she was then a sous chef at the Westin Hotel. She told us that her first job was slicing onions in a hotel kitchen. Because of her hard work, she went on to assume higher positions in the hotel industry. She met her husband, also a chef in the hotel where they both worked. She found her engagement ring nestled inside the dessert on the night that he proposed marriage to her. Teta and her husband are active members of their church and are faithfully serving the Lord. For everything that she has achieved, she always makes it a point to give the glory back to God because she knows that to whom much is given, much is required.

Teta was a contractual worker when she first started working at the White House. Her supervisor noted her exemplary work performance and offered her a regular position vacated by another chef. She was featured in the coffee table book, "Entertaining at the White House", authored by former First Lady Hillary Clinton. Teta keeps mum about her job. She and her immediate family cannot give interviews without the permission of the White House Press Office. Even if we, her friends extol her achievements, she never bragged about it. On her second visit here in 2004, to attend the Batch 79 Silver Reunion, she showed us albums with photos of her with former President Clinton and President Bush and also of Presidents Estrada and Arroyo when they visited the White House. We asked her to bring the albums to the reunion to show the other batch mates but she refused.

Teta has definitely gone a long way — from slicing onions to preparing state dinners for heads of states in the White House. We particularly like the comment in one article that came out in the US when she was appointed the new White House executive chef. We quote: "She might not become the US President, but she definitely has fed one. Or two? Or three?" Knowing Teta, she doesn’t rest on her laurels. She is very consistent with her job, and always aims to give her best to it.

Hail to the Chef! She is our dear friend! She is from our beloved Manila Science High School!

"Di ba special science high school ang MaSci?" is a common phrase the masci-alumni ask when troubled by the impact of the Republic Act 6655 to the MSHS. It is a lingering question every time.

Republic Act No. 6655, known as the "Free Public Secondary Education Act of 1988", provides in Section 7:
"Nationalization of Public Secondary Schools – To effectively implement the system, the establishment, renaming, conversion, integration, separation, administration, supervision and control of all public secondary school teachers and other school personnel, including the payment of their salaries, allowances and other fringe benefits as well as those already provided by local governments are hereby vested in the Department of Education, Culture and Sports."

For this reason, an earnest search for the Municipal Resolution 426, dated October 1, 1963, to find out the real status of MSHS at the outset brought me to the National Library a few months ago. This was after several days of futile sleuthing in the City Hall of Manila.

I was advised by the people from the archives section of the National Library that they only handle documents way back than 1963. My only hope was for some newspaper to have made a report of the municipal resolution 42 years ago.

That led me to a half-day of rummaging in the library’s newspaper section, hoping to find the "special science" phrase that may have described MSHS in one of its columns. For whatever purpose the phrase could serve us, it left me with no choice but to tussle with the dusty old newspaper compilations. That was an elusive search. However that did not stop us.

On May 3, the MSHSAFI wrote a letter of inquiry to the Division of City Schools-Manila, which replied through the MSHS principal, as follows:

Q: Was MSHS named as a "special science high school" by virtue of Municipal Resolution 426?
A: "MSHS was established on October 1, 1963 by virtue of Municipal Resolution 426. Its curriculum was patterned after Bronx Science High School in New York. It was the first science-oriented high school" (in the country).

Q: Does RA 6655 place MSHS among the ranks of regular public high schools?
A: All Manila secondary high schools prior to 1989 were subsidized and maintained by the local government of Manila. In 1989, as mandated by the Constitution for a free secondary education, all secondary high schools nationwide were nationalized (including MaSci). Manila Science High School remains a science high school.

Q: How do the various levels assigned to the schools (such as levels I to IV), affect the academic institution based on the teachers’ salaries, number of students, admission, etc?
A: The nationalized high schools were categorized according to the number of student population. The highest category is school IV with more than 3,000 enrollment. MSHS is school III because of its selective admission. The schools under the local government were not categorized. Under the salary standardization law, the teachers’ salary is based on salary grade level. All remuneration received by the teachers under the city government was incorporated during the nationalization of schools.

The same admission policy is still in effect. The students undergo the entrance exam prepared by the Division, administered by MSHS and checked by the Division. There is a cut-off score determined by the number of students to be accepted. Each section is composed of 30-35 students. The grade requirement (no grade lower than 85 in Science, English and math; 83 in all other subjects in any grading periods) is still enforced.

Q: Are the teachers assigned from other public schools, including new applicants, still required to meet high qualifications to be able to teach in MSHS after the nationalization?
A: Teacher applicants undergo the screening process as prescribed by the Professional Regulatory Commission. The interview is undertaken by the school and ranking is done based on merits. Hiring and assignments of teachers are done by the division office.

Q: Do MSHS teachers and administrators receive higher salary or salary incentives (before and after the nationalization) based on the higher qualifications that they have to meet and extra loads they get from teaching/administering MSHS as compared to regular public high schools?
A: Teachers receive the same incentives from the local and national governments like those from other schools.

Q: What kind of support does MSHS continue to receive from the Local and National Government after the nationalization?
A: The school gets its support in terms of infrastructure, incentives from the Special Education Fund of the city government. The national government also subsidizes its miscellaneous and other operating expenses.

After almost 17 years of the nationalization law, does it really matter now whether Mun. Res 426 named Manila Science High School as a "special science high school" from the start? Would specific sections of its Implementing Rules and Regulations allow exemptions or reconsiderations for MSHS based on this mere phrase? Is the school’s high academic standard and science curriculum not enough for MSHS to have been considered for exemption? Are we hoping for MSHS to regain its original source of funding prior to the nationalization?

Based on the information provided to us, the local government is already doing its part to fund the needs of MSHS. We have also written a letter to the City Government of Manila addressed to the Office of the Mayor. Although we have not received any official answer yet, we understand that the City of Manila has to distribute its local budget for education to the rest of the public schools in Manila. In short, we are already getting our slice of the pie.

Indeed, the MaSci-alumni with the PTCI and other benefactors are doing our part to provide assistance to the school, from repairs of laboratory rooms and computer rooms, stipend for qualified students, medical assistance for teachers and staff, sourcing of books, donation of computers, internet connectivity, science laboratory equipment, reagents and slide specimens for laboratory use, and so on. Benevolence may be far from waning, but we can only do so much. The question is, should we allow Manila Science, a school that hones the gifted students and future catalysts of this country to continue struggling financially?

Going back to the question: "Di ba special science high school ang MaSci?", it seems that officially, we are not!

But in my own opinion, indeed, "Manila Science is a special science high school". It is a special because it is the first science high school in the country. MSHS is special because of all its achievements despite its humble beginnings and with funding that is not at par with the other science high schools that we know of. It is special because of its resilience though time in producing alumni who excel in their chosen fields owing to the dedication of our beloved teachers. Manila Science is special to the hearts of its alumni, that our concern for our alma mater fueled us to strive to become an active and organized alumni network.

In our hearts, Manila Science is a special science high school. It should be given the special attention that the other science high schools have been enjoying. And if Manila Science is really "special" to us, there is so much more the alumni can do to achieve the "special" status that our beloved MaSci deserves.

BORN out of the enthusiasm of several groups of self-motivated individuals with a common pursuit of unifying the alumni, the Manila Science High School Alumni Foundation, Inc. (MSHSAFI) was founded on July 3, 2001, following several years of hard work and lessons picked up from the past.

The link that bonded the history of MSHSAFI started in a meeting on April 01, 2000 at Max’s Restaurant in Greenbelt, Makati. It was attended by five MSHS alumni, namely: Teresita Esmama-Cheng (Batch’67), Ephraim de Guzman ‘67, Dennis Salvador Yu’67, Ma. Zenith Felias-Viceral Batch ’71 and Melvin M. Miranda ’72.

The meeting was initiated by Ephraim de Guzman, President of the former Manila Science High School Alumni Association, Inc (MSHSAA). The purpose of the gathering was for the possible activation of the said Association. De Guzman is one of the 32 members of Class’67, the fifth batch of MSHS graduates and the last with only one section which graduated in Intramuros, Manila.

De Guzman recalled that in the first Homecoming he attended in 1969 in the present MSHS site along Taft Avenue, he saw only a handful of alumni. Not a dozen souls of batches 1965, 1966 and 1967. There was nothing memorable nor remarkable. No sign of enthusiasm to organize and elect officers of the alumni.

In 1976, he attended another Homecoming at the MSHS Auditorium. Many of the attendees were from batches 1970, 1971 and 1972. Noel Lazo of Batch’72 was elected as the Interim Alumni Association President with De Guzman as the Vice-President. Wilfredo Villegas of Batch’70 assisted Ephraim in initiating the updates on the alumni directory with the help of the then Principal, the late Honesto F. Valdez and Assistant Principal Romulita Cabanos-Alto by lending them the logbook of graduates.

In 1977, the group joined by a few more, held another homecoming with about 200 alumni and 20 teachers attending. The organizers who helped in that event were: Noel Lazo’72, Wilfredo Villegas’70, Fe Manzanares’71, Zenith Felias-Viceral’71, Pompeyo Adamos’65, Ricardo Isidro’70, Horacio Templo’70, Daniel Cabrera’65, Antonio Molina’76, Malou Suarez-Morell’72, and Nestor Encinas’72.

The former MSHS Alumni Association, Inc.

On September 24, 1987, the Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws of the Manila Science High School Alumni Association, Inc. (MSHSAA) were filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC, about a year after the registration of the NIDUS Foundation which was organized by alumni from Batches’65 and ’67.

The co-existence of the NIDUS and the MSHSAA created confusion among the alumni. The confusion was further heightened when the NIDUS launched a benefit premiere of the movie, "Color Purple" which starred Whoopi Goldberg shown at the Rizal Theater. Proceeds of the fund-raising activity went to the scholarship fund of Barbara Halili and Maria Nanette Pamatian, both from Batch’86, who studied at the University of the Philippines in Diliman.

The MSHSAA became a registered organization with the SEC on Sept. 30, 1987. The incorporators of the former MSHSAA were Daniel B. Cabrera’65, Ephraim L. de Guzman’67 (President), Teresita Esmama-Cheng’67, , Nestor B. Encinas’72, Jonas E. Magdangal’74, , Franzaida F. Mahinan ‘77, Emma M. Castaloni’77 Alvira Cesar-Reyes’78 (Secretary), Jovita M. Ligaya’78 (Treasurer), the late Ma.Cecilia B. Mabanag’78 and Ma. Cheryl F. Prudente’79.

In October 1987, the MSHSAA organized a Grand Alumni Homecoming "Nostalgia sa MaSci" at the MSHS quadrangle. More than 300 alumni attended. Mailed invitations and a telephone brigade with more alumni involved did the trick. The preparations were made possible through the help of Danny Cabrera’65, Zenith Felias-Viceral’71, Alvira Cesar-Reyes’78, Jovita Ligaya’78, the late Cecille Mabanag’78, Che Prudente’79, Cecibel Perez’79, Regina M. Bartolome’80, Zarah Concepcion Moti’83, Althea Palma’84, Irene Bercasio’84, Arnel Cabrera ’86, Joven Custodio Jr.’86, Roland Rodriguez’86 and Anabella Arceo’86.

Despite the promising start, the lack of regular source of funds, the limited number of able bodies within the core group and insufficient preparations for future plans weighed heavily on the MSHSAA. De Guzman recalls that only a handful were excited to fulfill the social goals of the Association and more importantly, the objectives to look after the school needs in terms of infrastructure and student needs. This could be the very reason why the MSHSAA did not have a chance to develop a close association with the school administration, which is very important.

While slowly, the association ceased to function as an active organization, the camaraderie among the core members continued. It was not surprising therefore that after more than a decade, the dream to unite the MaSci-alumni did not die. Fortified with a common experience and friendship, former members of the MSHSAA and several more alumni who share the same vision of a united MSHS Alumni joined hands to assist Manila Science High School more effectively.

Soon after the April 1, 2000 gathering which was initiated by De Guzman, another meeting was held on May 6, 2000 at the MSHS. With an objective to revive the MSHSAA through the support of the rest of the alumni, the group scheduled a Grand Alumni Homecoming on September 30 of the same year. Teresita Esmama-Cheng’71, chaired the overall coordination of the homecoming. As everyone in the group busily prepared for the event, Dennis Yu and Danny Tangangco headed the directory updates of the alumni, while Melvin Miranda worked on the verification of SEC existence of the Association.

Under the interim status, an "Event Web Site" for the purposes of the Sept. 30, 2000 Homecoming was uploaded still bearing the name of the Manila Science High School Alumni Association.

Sometime before that date, Atty. Melvin Miranda reported to the interim board that the inactive status of the MSHSAA would entail requirements that be more tedious than filing for a new name for the organization. Determined to carry on with the objective to organize a mother organization for the MSHS Alumni, the situation was welcomed as an opportunity to register a new MSHS Alumni organization as a Foundation.

The MSHS Alumni Foundation, Inc.

The name Manila Science High School Alumni Foundation, Inc. (MSHSAFI) was adopted on October 06, 2000 in a meeting held at the Tektite Building in Ortigas Center, Pasig City. Fifteen committed batch coordinators became the pre-incorporators: Pompeyo Adamos’65, Constantino Flores’66, Teresita Esmama-Cheng’67, Amor Noble-Roque’69, Ma. Zenith Felias-Viceral’71, Efren E.S Ricalde’71, Delfin Ganapin,Jr.’71, Melvin Miranda’72, Rumel Atienza’73, Corazon Alano’74, Redentor Tongco’75, Ma. Cheryl Prudente’79, Regina M. Bartolome’80 and Andrew Mari F.B. Taruc’94.

Atty. Melvin M. Miranda of Batch’72 ably spearheaded the drafting of the Foundation’s Constitution and By-Laws. A series of meetings followed particularly on the discussions and revisions of the drafted documents to conform with the SEC requirements. On November 27, 2000, a meeting was held at the MSHS Media Center, wherein eight out of the 15 trustees constituted a quorum and elected the interim officers of the Foundation, namely: Melvin M. Miranda (President), Teresita Emama-Cheng (Vice-President), Efren E.S. Ricalde (Secretary), Ma. Zenith Felias-Viceral (Treasurer) and Regina M. Bartolome (Auditor). Che Prudente was eventually elected as the Deputy Secretary.

On Dec. 12, 2000, an initial capitalization of P181,210.65 in the form of cash and Manager’s check contributed by Alumni of different batches, was deposited at Equitable PCI Bank, Luneta Branch by interim President Melvin Miranda and Ma. Zenith Felias-Viceral acting as Treasurer-In-Trust. It was later decided in 2001 to transfer the funds totaling P181,330.65 after interest to the Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company (METROBANK), U.N. Avenue Branch in Ermita, Manila.

The realization of all the hard work finally came on July 03, 2001whenthe Securities a n d Exchange Commission (SEC) released the issuance o f the Certificate of Incorporation recognizing the Manila Science High School Alumni Foundation, Inc. (MSHSAF, Inc.) a s a non-stock and non-profit foundation thereby confirming the Foundation’s official legal existence.

Learning from the lessons of the past, the Foundation continued to move forward by systematizing the implementation of projects for MSHS. The Project Committee, then chaired by Che Prudente’79, drafted a system of project coordination in 2001 which procedures were already adopted by the MaSci-Medics, the pioneering project of the MSHSAFI since 2000. The system commence with the needs assessment from the various stakeholders of the MSHS. Aided with the emergence of the electronic communications through internet and electronic mail, dissemination of the school needs was easily conveyed to the rest of the MaSci-alumni to gain sponsorships. The MSHS identifies its needs—the MSHSAFI mediates—the alumni sponsor and get credit for the project. This system became a virtual connection that linked MSHS, MSHSAFI and the masci-alumni for four (4) years now. Noting the school’s significance in the Foundation’s history, the MSHS Principal then, Mrs. Susan Yano welcomed this collaboration with the MSHSAFI.

The coordination system took shape and found a niche in the process. Through the relentless effort of the past and the present Board of Trustees (BOT) to sustain a procedure for implementing projects to benefit MSHS, the system was further refined and was officially adapted as the Project Coordination System (PCS) in 2004.

Starting with one hundred seventy-nine (179) individual founding members in 2001, the MSHSAFI, to date, has grown to more than 1,100 members from the registered six Batch members ( ’72, ’76, ’77, ’78, ’79 and ’81), six lifetime individual members (Edmundo M.Castañeda, ’63, Teresita V. Esmama-Cheng, ’67, Corazon Loteyro, ’68, Delfin J.Ganapin, Jr.’71,YolandaDizon-Bondoc’75 and Jaymi Therese Esmama Cheng’96) and around 50 regular individual members.

As the Foundation carries the banner "Dedicated to foster camaraderie and cooperation in assisting our alma mater", the MSHSAFI welcomes more members and future Board of Trustees who will continue to mark the success in history of a united MaSci alumni.

On November 25, 1959, the first pilot science high school in the Philippines was established in a single-storey building in Intramuros, Manila. Modeled after the Bronx High School of Science in New York, United States of America, its special science curriculum was designed to meet the needs of scholars gifted in science and mathematics. Its first batch of students numbering 32 was screened from a highly competitive entrance examination. Aside from academic, training in varied fields is generated for the wide and balanced development of students.

Under the able supervision of Mr. Augusto Alzona, its principal who later became known as the “Father of Manila Science High School”, the pilot science high school was a success. This paved the way to its official establishment as the Manila Science High School on October 1, 1963 by virtue of Municipal Resolution 426 signed by Mayor Antonio Villegas.

In 1967, the Manila Science High School moved to the three-storey Bordner Building in Taft Avenue corner Padre Faura Street, Ermita, its present site, with its first principal, Mr. Honesto Valdez (1963-1977). The site is just across the Supreme Court building.

On September 1977, during the term of Mrs. Evelina P. Barotilla (1977-1988), the second principal, the Bordner Building was renovated and the Manila Science High School main building was completed. Likewise, the Home Economics Building was built in 1980.

In 1998, the Technology Creativity Laboratory was constructed. It was done during the term of Mrs. Daisy H. Banta (1988-2000), the third principal, and funded by the Special Education Fund.

In 2000, the Antonio Maceda Building was erected under the term of Mrs. Susan A. Yano (2000-2002), the fourth principal. It was also during her term when the Manila Science High School Alumni Association was revived. However, Mrs. Susan A. Yano opted for an early retirement. In place of her were Ms. Edna P. Parcon, Math Department Head III, as Officer-in-Charge from July 18, 2002 to January 13, 2003 and Ms. Betty de la Cruz, Science Supervisor, assigned as Supervisor-in-Charge from October 13, 2002 to January 13, 2003.

On January 13, 2003, Mrs. Rosita C. Herson (2003-2006) was assigned as the fifth principal of the Manila Science High School. Sadly, she was transferred to Torres High School in Tondo. In place of her is Mrs. Salud S. Sabado, the sixth and current principal.

At present, the school still lives up to its curriculum focused on science and mathematics, including technology and training in varied fields for the well-rounded development of students. Algebra and Earth Science are being studied in the first year. Biology, Research, Physics, Chemistry, Geometry and Statistics are studied in the second year. Advanced Biology, Research, Physics, Chemistry and Advanced Algebra are being offered in the third year. For the fourth year, Research, Advanced Physics, Advanced Chemistry, Analytic Geometry and Finite Mathematics are being studied. Research courses in the third and fourth years require students to submit research works/documents/proposals for science fairs. Computer Science subjects are also being offered to all levels as well as languages for the second, third and fourth years. Accounting subjects are given to third year students while Robotics is also being offered.
